What does med spa insurance cover for a practice?

Two kinds of cover sit in this category. The first is liability cover for an individual: esthetician, injector, nurse or laser technician. ASCP, Alternative Balance, Elite Beauty Society, Hands On Trade and BBI sell individual policies at published prices. NSO sells malpractice insurance to nurses with aesthetic procedure coverage, and HPSO covers nearly 100 non-surgical aesthetic procedures for provider and firm under one policy.

The second is cover for the business, naming the med spa entity and its staff. CM&F Group sells a group malpractice policy for med spas covering the business and its clinicians. Huntersure underwrites entity coverage for a med spa and its staff. Olson Duncan arranges professional liability covering the corporation and staff, including aestheticians, laser technicians, nurses and medical directors.

Coverage types overlap across both groups: professional liability (malpractice), general liability, property, workers compensation, cyber liability and business interruption. CM&F Group offers supervising physician and medical director coverage as add-ons, Huntersure covers physicians for administration, supervisory duties, good faith exams or direct patient care on request, and BBI offers errors and omissions coverage for medical directors as an add-on. Marine Agency says off-site services, including botox parties, can be covered, and independent contractors can be included as insureds.

Which providers publish a price?

8 of the 20 publish a price:

ProviderPublished starting price
NEXT InsuranceFrom $11/mo (general liability, low-risk businesses)
Beauty & Bodywork Insurance (BBI)$9.99/mo or $96/yr for an esthetician policy, $3 million aggregate
Elite Beauty Society$179 one-year policy; $299 total for two years; $49/yr student
Hands On Trade Association$190/yr esthetician; $240/yr microneedling
ASCP$259/yr or $23/mo membership
Alternative Balance$269/yr membership
HuntersureFrom a $1,200 minimum premium, individual practitioner
MedispaCoverFrom $1,800-$2,500/yr starting premium, new or start-up med spa, qualified applicants

NEXT Insurance is the only one of the eight whose headline price is monthly; BBI and ASCP also list monthly options. NEXT describes the $11/mo as a general liability starting point for low-risk businesses; in our read, not a med spa quote. It has no med spa page; its esthetician page packages general liability, professional liability, commercial auto, workers compensation and commercial property coverage.

These 12 publish no price: Allied Beauty Experts, CM&F Group, CarePro Insurance, Cunningham Group, HPSO, Insureon, Latent Insurance, Malpractice Insurance Co., Marine Agency, NSO, Olson Duncan Insurance and PPIB.

Three of the 12 publish figures instead of a price. CarePro says solo injectors typically pay $800-$1,500 annually, small med spas $2,000-$3,500, and full-service practices start at $4,000. Insureon publishes averages from its own med spa customers: $52 per month for general liability and $208 per month for professional liability. Malpractice Insurance Co. states typical premiums of $800-$7,000 a year, lower for injectors and higher for surgeons. These are the providers' own ranges and averages, not quotes.

Quote speed, where published: CarePro's self-serve portal prices your quote in 2-3 minutes, CM&F Group gives one on screen in as little as five minutes, and PPIB says quotes normally take 3-5 business days, with pricing set only after underwriting reviews a completed application.

Is the price for you or for the practice?

Six of the eight publish an annual price for an individual practitioner, running from $96 a year at BBI to a $1,200 minimum premium at Huntersure. Entity pricing, where published, is separate and higher: Huntersure's minimum premium is $2,400 for a med spa entity with professional liability only, or $3,000 with general liability added. MedispaCover lists from $5,000/yr for multi-clinic and multi-location groups, from $4,000-$7,000/yr for specialty high risk work, and from $5,000-$7,500/yr for live stem cell, regenerative therapy or plastic surgery practices, and builds its premiums from your treatments, practitioner credentials, claims history and annual revenue.

BBI shows the split. Its esthetician policy is bought online from $9.99/month or $96/year for $3 million aggregate coverage. Its med spa program is a separate application reviewed by a licensed agent. No med spa premium is published.

Published prices and coverage move with treatments. Cunningham Group says there are two classes for medical spa services and quotes by treatment type: lasers, fillers, Botox and peels. Hands On Trade's microneedling cover is $240/yr, requires an active cosmetologist or esthetician license, and does not cover microneedling that incorporates PRP. Allied Beauty Experts splits med spa cover into three levels, Medspa I to III, chosen by the treatments you offer, with laser procedures marked as requiring additional premium and IV therapy, hormone therapy and PDO threading in Medspa III. PPIB writes the policy around the services you offer; if you only need laser hair removal, the policy can cover just that.

What costs extra?

6 of the 20 state a setup or fee policy on their sites. BBI says no membership fees. Latent Insurance states zero placement fees. Cunningham Group says a malpractice insurance broker costs you nothing extra because commissions are built into the premium. ASCP charges no fee for additional insured endorsements. Two publish a charge: Elite Beauty Society applies a $5 processing fee at checkout, and PPIB charges a broker fee for handling the account and issuing the policy, amount not stated.

ASCP's advanced esthetics insurance for laser hair removal, billed separately by Allied Professionals Insurance Company, is $1,191 Premier or $991 Elite, with a $10 service charge if paid in quarterly installments, and its optional business personal property cover is $99/yr for $10,000 of coverage or $299/yr for $30,000. Alternative Balance covers permanent makeup as a premium service.

Payment plans are published too: Allied Beauty Experts describes a plan of 50% down, skip the next month, then up to 10 months for the balance. MedispaCover offers payment plans through a financing partner, 25% down then monthly payments, with no credit check. Malpractice Insurance Co. lists monthly payment options.

How long is the policy, and how do you cancel?

3 of the 20 publish a minimum term: ASCP membership runs for 12 months with a monthly payment option, and MedispaCover says policies can be cancelled after 90 days. NEXT Insurance states no minimum term and is the only one of the 20 that publishes month-to-month terms.

9 of the 20 publish how cancellation works, and the refund terms differ:

  • NEXT Insurance: you can pay monthly or annually and cancel instantly at any time.
  • BBI: cancel online from your dashboard; coverage ends on cancellation.
  • CM&F Group: cancel by phone or email, stating the cancellation date.
  • HPSO: submit the request in writing by email, fax or mail; the policy is cancelled from the date the request is received.
  • PPIB: requires a signed cancellation form, after which unearned premium is calculated under the policy terms.
  • MedispaCover: cancel at any time after 90 days, with at least 25% of the policy cost kept.
  • NSO: for business policies, no refund is provided for staff who leave during the year.
  • Alternative Balance: memberships and policies are non-refundable once coverage begins, except where it finds a business non-compliant with a policy.
  • Hands On Trade: no refunds; policy premiums are 100% minimum earned.

For the other 11, cancellation terms are not published; only ASCP among them publishes a term, its 12-month membership.

What proof do the sites publish?

0 of the 20 publish a case study with a result. MedispaCover names clients in testimonials, and NEXT Insurance names its three founders. 6 of the 20 offer a free quote or consultation: CM&F Group, Cunningham Group, Insureon, Latent Insurance, Malpractice Insurance Co. and MedispaCover. 0 of the 20 publish a free trial.

Data ownership and HIPAA were not part of what we recorded for insurers, so ask about both if a policy touches patient records.

What should you ask before you sign?

  1. Does this policy cover the business entity and my staff, or only me?
  2. Which treatments on my menu are covered, which are excluded, and which carry additional premium?
  3. Is my medical director or supervising physician covered, and for which duties?
  4. What are the per-claim and aggregate limits?
  5. Are there broker fees, processing fees or membership fees on top of the premium?
  6. How do I cancel, what notice is required, and how much premium is refundable?
  7. Are independent contractors and off-site services covered?
