  • 4 of the 21 state a minimum term and 1 publishes what happens when the work ends. None of the 21 states month-to-month terms.
  • 14 of the 21 offer a free call, consultation, evaluation or valuation before you commit.
  • 4 of the 21 publish a case study with figures, and 3 do not name their team on the pages we checked.

Every figure below links to a vendor profile, and each profile links to the page the figure came from.

What does a med spa consultant do for a med spa?

The category covers several kinds of help, and they are not interchangeable.

Operations and growth consultants and coaches work on how the practice runs, with the mix depending on the firm: staffing, sales training, pricing, KPIs and profit. They include Shorr Solutions, Projected Growth Consulting, The Spa Business Coach, The Spa Coach, Will Barton Ventures, Durocher Enterprises and Illumination Consulting. Startup and launch specialists help you open a practice: Lexi Design and DermAesthetic Consulting. MedSpa Advisor sells state regulatory compliance help alongside startup consulting and medical director placement. Maven Financial Partners sells fractional CFO work. The rest work on selling a business. Aesthetic Brokers, Agenda Health, Med Spa Business Broker, Physician Growth Partners, Skytale Group, TUSK Practice Sales, Viper Partners and John M. Salony advise owners on a sale. CT Acquisitions works from the other side of the deal: it introduces owners to buyers and is paid by the buyer. Diamond Accelerator combines consulting with recruiting and marketing.

4 of the 21 work only with med spas and aesthetic practices: Diamond Accelerator, Med Spa Business Broker, MedSpa Advisor and The Spa Business Coach. Several of the others name other kinds of businesses on their sites: dental practices at Aesthetic Brokers, Maven Financial Partners, Physician Growth Partners and Viper Partners; spas at Durocher Enterprises, Lexi Design and The Spa Coach; dermatology and plastic surgery at Illumination Consulting, Projected Growth Consulting and Shorr Solutions; and other practice types and industries at Agenda Health, CT Acquisitions, John M. Salony, Skytale Group, TUSK Practice Sales and Will Barton Ventures.

Decide which kind of help you need first. A firm that sells exit advice answers a different question from one that trains your front desk.

Who publishes a price?

3 of the 21 do: CT Acquisitions, Durocher Enterprises and John M. Salony.

The other 18 do not: Aesthetic Brokers, Agenda Health, DermAesthetic Consulting, Diamond Accelerator, Illumination Consulting, Lexi Design, Maven Financial Partners, Med Spa Business Broker, MedSpa Advisor, Physician Growth Partners, Projected Growth Consulting, Shorr Solutions, Skytale Group, TUSK Practice Sales, The Spa Business Coach, The Spa Coach, Viper Partners and Will Barton Ventures.

Some of the 18 state how they charge even though they state no amount. Aesthetic Brokers says it is paid a success fee at closing and that some engagements add a retainer or upfront fee. TUSK Practice Sales says it is paid only by its clients on a success-fee basis. Skytale Group says work is done as one-time fixed-fee projects or ongoing advisory. Shorr Solutions says it sells focused packages or full-service annual consulting. Diamond Accelerator says the cost varies by service. Med Spa Business Broker's terms say any fee arrangement is set only in a signed written agreement.

A private price is not a sign of a bad product. It does mean the number only exists in a conversation, so get it in writing.

What do the published figures look like?

The three published figures are different kinds of number:

FirmPublished figureWhat it coversMinimum term as stated
CT AcquisitionsNo fee to sellersThe buyer pays its success fee at closingNo exclusivity contract for sellers
Durocher EnterprisesFrom $2,400Four months of coaching, two one-hour calls a month4 months
John M. Salony6% commissionThe sale, paid at closing, success fee onlyNot published

No firm in this category publishes a monthly starting price. A 6% commission and a package from $2,400 are not alternatives to each other; they price different work on different outcomes. Durocher Enterprises prices business planning and related consulting on consultation, so even its own figures do not cover everything it sells. Ask each firm for the total for your situation.

What will you pay before the work starts?

4 of the 21 state a policy on upfront money:

  • CT Acquisitions: none. Its site says it takes no retainers or success fees from owners.
  • John M. Salony: none. The site states no upfront fees or retainers.
  • TUSK Practice Sales: none before closing. It says it collects no payment until the transaction closes.
  • Aesthetic Brokers: some engagements include a retainer or upfront fee. The amount is not stated.

Read the free offers closely too. Shorr Solutions asks you to schedule a free consult on its site and states a $300 consultation fee required on its consultation page, so ask which applies when you book. Illumination Consulting offers a business consultation it values at $285 US. CT Acquisitions offers a free preliminary valuation range in 24 hours.

How long are you committed?

4 of the 21 state a minimum term:

None of the 21 states month-to-month terms, and the rest state no term at all.

Published timelines describe delivery, not commitment. Will Barton Ventures says its med spa audit is delivered in 7 to 30 days based on scope. The Spa Coach describes a 48-hour financial review followed by a 90-day blueprint. Physician Growth Partners describes a sale process in three phases: 6 to 8 weeks of preparation, 8 to 12 weeks of marketing and 10 to 12 weeks of exclusivity. None of those pages states what you owe if you stop partway through.

What happens when the engagement ends?

1 of the 21 publishes anything here. Diamond Accelerator states that if a placed candidate does not perform, you do not pay; the conditions are not published. The other 20 state no cancellation terms.

If a firm writes your business plan, sales scripts, training manuals or financial model, ask who keeps them and whether you can keep using them after you stop paying, and put the answer in the agreement. If you are hiring a broker, ask what happens if the sale falls through, who owes what at that point, and whether you are free to work with someone else.

What proof can you check before you hire?

4 of the 21 publish a case study with a figure:

Firms that sell med spa sales can show named transactions instead. Physician Growth Partners names Glow Aesthetics Medical Spa among its sell-side work. Skytale Group names Glow Medispa, MD Esthetics and Windermere Medical Spa & Laser Institute. Viper Partners names Park Avenue Med Spa and Skin Science Aesthetics. A named transaction shows the firm has done this kind of work; it does not tell you what the result was worth.

3 of the 21 do not name their team on the pages we checked: Illumination Consulting, Med Spa Business Broker and Viper Partners. Ask exactly who will do the work and what med spa work they have done before.

What should you ask on a sales call?

  1. What exactly is in scope for your fee, and what costs extra?
  2. How are you paid: a flat fee, a retainer, a success fee or a commission? Who pays you, and do you represent anyone else in the deal?
  3. Is anything due up front: a retainer, deposit or consultation fee?
  4. What is the minimum commitment, does it renew, and what does it cost to stop early?
  5. Who will do the work, and what med spa work have they done?
  6. Who owns the business plan, scripts, manuals and financial models you produce?
  7. Which results came from named med spa clients, and can I speak to one of them?
